CARES Group carried out an inspection of the Avocet Gold Mines Barrage and it was clear that the dam was failing. As a result CARES Group provided the design of a labyrinth spillway that offered a cost-effective, low maintenance solution.
Avocet’s Inata Gold Mine had a barrage with a 400m wide overflow section to the east of the barrage. This original scheme was an earthfill bund with rock erosion protection. During floods in 2009 and again in 2010 erosion problems were experienced and a more permanent solution was sought.
CARES Group recommended and designed a Labyrinth Spillway which compressed the length of the original failed crest into a series of trapezoidal sections resulting in a more economical structure with higher discharge per metre width of spillway.
CARES Group provided the design of a labyrinth spillway that offered a cost-effective, low maintenance solution using minimal construction materials, providing a substantial cost saving for Avocet.
CARES Group also provided on-site Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) during the construction works.
