CARES completed a comprehensive sedimentation study to objectively define the sediment transport regime within Lagos Harbour which suffers from heavy siltation.
The purpose of the work was to inform future investment planning and the optimisation of dredging plans, budgets and operational decision-making.
The scope of work incorporated two main parts: firstly, the setting-up, calibration and running of numerical models to be able to analyse the hydrodynamics and sediment transport behaviour; and, secondly undertaking a survey programme to collect data and to feed the study generally and the model, specifically with up-to-date measurements.
The survey programme comprised of four survey phases to include a Wet and Dry Season; and, neap and spring tidal cycles.
Data on bathymetry (Multibeam), current flow, salinity, density and sediment type was collected during the project.
