Hydrological and Siltation Modeling to Understand the Potential Impact of Deepening Lagos Harbour

Due to an increase in the size of vessels visiting the port of Lagos, Lagos Channel Management (LCM)wished to examine the feasibility of increasing the navigable channel depth to -15.0m CD along with the corresponding change in depth of the entrance channel. Consequently, as part of a wider project, CARES Group conducted a Hydrodynamic and Siltation Study to examine how the proposed deepening would likely change the current regime and sediment transport.

The objectives of the Hydrodynamic and Siltation Study were to assess if the current regime in Lagos Harbour would likely change as a result of the channel deepening and to establish if any changes will likely impact sediment transport. Furthermore, a key output of the study was providing input into a Navigation Simulation Study (NSS) to identify the maritime safety risks of larger vessels using the modified channels to enter and exit Lagos Harbour.
