The Accra Plain is located on the lower Right Bank of the Volta River in Ghana’s Volta Region and consists of about 200,000 hectares, much of which remains under-cultivated due to lack of irrigation
infrastructure and services.
Following the completion of the Kpong dam, a more controlled approach enabled gravitational irrigation to an area of 3,000 hectares of the Kpong Right Bank Irrigation Project (KIS), currently under rehabilitation, and more recently 1,000 ha of the Kpong Left Bank Irrigation Project (KLBIP), currently under extension.
A new initiative led by the Government of Ghana (GoG), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) established a plan for the design and build for the development of select areas of the Accra Plain, extending irrigation infrastructure and services to a New Development Irrigation Scheme (NDIS), covering a gross area of 11,000 ha.
