Conduct a 3-day Proving Navigation Simulation Study (NSSP) for a Container Design Vessel access to and from Berths 11 and 12, port of Onne, Nigeria

BCC intends to develop Berths 11 & 12, the port of Onne, for commercial access. A turning area

concept design drawing was proved for

operational use by the design vessel via an NSSP.

• NSSP dependency requirements included:

• Turning Area concept design engineering drawing.

• Modelled tidal stream data based on the turning area concept design.

CARES Maritime Division was commissioned to:

• Prove the turning area concept design for a c300m LOA and c45m beam container design vessel (DV).

• Access to both berths for the port side and starboard side to alongside required.

• Conduct arrival, turn, and departure maneuvers to both berths for single occupancy.

• Develop environmental and operational Baseline Statements for DV limits (mitigation).

• Identify key safety areas (ie ‘Pinch Point’ (PP)) that require investigation.

• Review turning areas

• Aids to Navigation (AtoN)

• Impact on port-channel access for other port users

Project Aim: To prove a turning area concept design engineering drawing for a container design vessel’s (DV) access to and from Berths 11 & 12, port of Onne, Nigeria

CARES services included:

Provide: A Full Mission Bridge Simulator capability.

Generate: Accurate channel limits and turning area’s bathymetry for an NTPro 5000 Simulator System’s Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC).

Provide: Appropriate simulator system models to reflect real-life DV and local tug characteristics such as dimensions, power capabilities, and capacities etc.

Create: A methodology to prove the turning area concept design drawing for DV operations.

Provide: Analysis of the amount of water used and the associated maritime safety risk levels for arrival, turn, and departure manoeuvres.

Provide: A Kick Off Briefing (KOB) on Day 1 for the observers and representatives attending the NSSP.

Provide: A comprehensive report of the NSSP maritime observations, findings and recommendations to inform CARES overall outcome report to the client
