Steven Smith

Steven Smith is a chartered engineer with 25+ years’ experience in the technical and commercial management of infrastructure development. His speciality is in project procurement, contract preparation and administration.

Steven joined CARES in April 2008 and was appointed Region Manager for West Africa. He has been working overseas since 1984. Since joining CARES he has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of two large contracts where CARES are acting as technical auditors on behalf of Nigerian Ports Authority for the Lagos Harbour, and Bonny Waterways. He has also been responsible for the project management of a number of projects in the Lagos Harbour area related to ground investigation works and structural stability of existing quays.

Between 2000 and 2004 Steven worked in Ghana as team leader for a project to design and build six river bridges for the Ghana Highways Agency. In the late 1990’s he was responsible as Project Manager for extensive refurbishment of Mesaieed Port, Qatar including major structural concrete repairs, sheet piling, seabed clearance and dredging, upgrading of dockside services and facilities. The port handles hydrocarbon, sulphur and LDPE exports, steelworks materials import and general cargo. In addition to overall contract responsibility, he had particular responsibility for cost control and liaison with the five industries using the port facilities to keep the port fully operational throughout the contract.
