Chipoka Port is part of the Northern Transport Corridor designed to provide a route for containerised goods to be shipped on Lake Malawi.
CARES Group was initially assigned by the Ministry of Transport, to conduct an economic and feasibility study for the rehabilitation of Chipoka Port.
The project involved an economic study of the shipping using the port, alongside estimates of potential future growth. Combined with the economic study was a study of wave conditions and littoral drift.
A preliminary design for a new breakwater was provided. The design incorporated measures to minimise the siltation of the port and was provided alongside cost estimates for the dredging and breakwater design implementation.
The project was conducted through site surveys, interviews with the existing port users, economic studies, and investigation into the wave conditions and littoral drift. Following the completion of the economic and feasibility, study CARES Group was commissioned to provide detailed design for the breakwater to reduce waves in the berthing area and minimise sedimentation.
