CARES provided Tullow with support for training of approximately 15 staff completing NVQs in
Occupational Health and Safety Practice (OHSP). CARES developed and provided a bespoke Occupational Hygiene Training Course to take account of the background of the participants, who were understood to have limited knowledge in the area.
Occupational Hygiene is about identifying hazards in the workplace and developing effective control strategies, which may also include measuring the impact of the controls. The objective is to mitigate exposure risks in the workplace before they have time to develop into cases of occupational ill health.
Key topic areas included in the course were noise sampling, dust sampling, air quality monitoring, light
monitoring, water sampling, and asbestos. For each topic area the training included an introduction to the reasons for monitoring, including the benefits of preventative monitoring; relevant legislation (UK); monitoring techniques; and results analysis.
Training was delivered using presentation-based training alongside practical assessments using occupational hygiene monitoring and sampling equipments.
