CARES was commissioned to review existing multi- purpose irrigation schemes to determine if they could be brought into hydropower production, or if the existing capacity could be increased.
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources had over many years built eight large, multi-purpose irrigation schemes, in which there were facilities for hydropower development. However, in some cases the equipment had been installed but never connected into the grid and in other cases the equipment had been supplied, but never installed. Furthermore, there was the possibility of using surplus water for additional installed generating capacity.
CARES carried out a review of eight multi-purpose irrigation schemes to provide recommendations as to the likely hydropower generating capacity and / or the potential for increased capacity.
