events. Heavy snow had fallen on the mountains in December
and January 2010 followed by a sudden thaw. The floods had resulted in
4,000 people being evacuated and some 20,000 threatened. At the
meeting with the Prime Minister, Dr Berisha, Mr Sheerman-Chase outlined
a three stage plan to overcome the problems. Dr Berisha expressed
his gratitude to the team and said he and his government were anxious
to resolve the serious situation. Bonny River Feasibility Study, NigeriaCARES have been commissioned to undertake a feasibility study to optimise the dredging requirement along 32 kilometres of the Bonny River to Port Harcourt, increasing the present navigable depth from less than -8.5m to -10.5m. For Bonny Channel Company Geotechnical Investigation, Buchanan, LiberiaCARES are undertaking a near shore investigation to determine the founding parameters for jetties and other structures off the Port of Buchanan, and assess the dredgability of the bed material to allow for deep draft vessels. For Mittal Steel Liberia Flood Management Study – Prut Barlad, RomaniaCARES Limited have been commissioned to provide specialist services to Hyda Consultants on the Prut Barlad scheme in North Eastern Romania. This area suffers from significant flooding due to local meteorological conditions. CARES Limited are providing specialist services involved in the 80 dams within the project area, including the Stanca Dam on the border with Moldova. Technical input includes the review of the operation of the dams for flood management and performance of the spillways to include within the flood model study. Investigation of Quay Wall Stability, NIPCO, Apapa, LagosCARES Limited have been commissioned by Nigerian Petroleum Company to carry out a study into the stability of the present facilities in connection with the deepening of the Channel. The work includes Geotechnical Investigations both on land and off-shore and an analysis of the stability of the sheet pile walls. This contract is currently ongoing. |
