Phil Friend - Managing Director
Philip Friend has 30 years of experience, mainly in the coordination, project
management and contract administration of power schemes and infrastructure works. His experience covers
all aspects of contract administration and management from preparation of contract documents,
pre-qualification and tender processes, through bid evaluation, contract negotiation to administration,
payment certification, completion certification and evaluation of claims.
Andrew Sheerman-Chase - Dam Safety Expert
Andrew Sheerman-Chase has over 38 years experience in dam and reservoir
engineering. He has been responsible for major projects both in the UK and overseas, in the design and
supervision of the construction of major dam projects. These include hydropower, irrigation and water
supply and dams for mining waste disposal.
Steven Smith - Region Manager for West Africa
Steven Smith is a chartered engineer with over 25 years experience in the technical
and commercial management of infrastructure development. Steven has been working overseas since 1984 and
has been in Africa since 2000, working permanently in Nigeria since 2004. His work in Nigeria has included
the construction supervision of the Container Terminal in Onne Port, development of the Apapa Container Terminal
for the AP Moller Maersk Group and technical auditing for Lagos Harbour, and Bonny Channel and River.
Dr Zedi M Nyirenda - Senior Geotechnical Engineering Manager
Dr Zedi Nyirenda is a Geotechnical Engineer with over 20 years experience with
leading engineering consultancies. Key experience has been in the Oil and Gas, infrastructure and
railway and coastal engineering sectors. Specific projects have included coastal developments, city
centre developments, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), the London Millennium Footbridge, and Phase
II of the Great Man Made River Project (GMRPII).
Mark Donald - Senior Mining Engineer
Mr Donald has over 15 years experience in the geotechnical and mining field, and
over the past 10 years has been responsible for a number of large tailing dam facilities in Southern
Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, including undertaking the role of Resident Engineer on new dam
constructions and dam closure. He has worked at CARES since 2005, specialising in geotechnical site
investigations on a variety of projects involving embankments and storage ponds. Other projects have
included, slope stability analysis, seepage analysis and project management for large scale site
investigations.
Peter McEwen - Ports and Harbours Engineer
Peter has over 30 years experience in planning, design and supervision of
construction of marine and harbour works. Recent experience has included project management, operational
and planning studies for proposed and existing ports, marinas, fishing harbours, hydraulic modelling of
